There are two other resolutions submitted on education that we are aware of.
The first is a good resolution, submitted by Phil Kell of the California Baptist Foundation. Consistent with the independent nature of the Southern Baptists, it calls upon local congregations, "...to honestly and prayerfully investigate and evaluate whether other educational alternatives such as serious Christian schools and Christian home schooling are doing a better job of assisting parents and grandparents with the task of raising children and grandchildren who are true disciples of Christ."
We welcome a dialogue on this question as a sign of health and for the potential it provides to settle important matters about the direction and faith of our children, and ultimately, our nation. However, we do not believe this resolution goes far enough. The evidence is init's time to get our kids out of government schools.

The second resolution is, in our opinion, quite liberal. It is submitted by Jim West, a pastor from Petros, Tennessee. Mr. West has gone on record, as indicated elsewhere on this website, that the conservative direction of the Southern Baptist convention during the last 25 years is a problem, created by laymen interpreting scripture and leading the denomination. Mr. West's wife is a public school teacher, and he is a member of the Jesus Seminar, and other liberal interpretation groups that reject out-of-hand the inerrancy of scripture.
The resolution argues that we are to be Salt & Light. In interviews, West has compared withdrawing our children from public schools with monasticism, and accused those of us who support this resolution of ignoring the Great Commission. As we explained elsewhere on this site,
and even in our resolution (click here and

we are very Great Commission oriented. What we wonder is whether our Mission Board standards allow missionaries into the field who still need help cutting their meat and dressing themselves in the morning?
