Analysis
Is it your goal to bring up your children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord?
What would such an upbringing look like?
- A child would have self-control
- Proverbs 25:28 "A person without self-control is as defenseless as a city with broken-down walls."
- A child would learn to avoid foolishness
- Proverbs 22:15 "Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child; The rod of discipline will remove it far from him."
- And perhaps, the most important of all, the ability to resist peer pressure
- Psalms 144:1 "Blessed be the LORD my Rock, Who trains my hands for war, And my fingers for battle"
- And how would they learn these, and other important traits?
- Proverbs 22:6 "Train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it."
Why is Ephesians 6:4 so important to this resolution?
The Bible teaches us that raising children is the responsibility of parents. It further teaches that the spiritual upbringing of the child is the father's responsibility. Paul had already addressed wives, husbands, and children, and then he says, "Fathers, provoke not your children..."
Notice that there are no words of wisdom on raising children given to school teachers and administrators, nor to the governing authorities. If a father is going to delegate the responsibility for educating his son or daughter, he needs to do so carefully. He needs to be absolutely sure that the upbringing he seeks to provide his children at home and at church is not contradicted, but reinforced by the place his child spends the majority of his or her day.
We cannot blame the public schools for what they do to their children. Blame must rest squarely on the father's shoulders, for it is he who subjects his children to a government education.
